Think about it.
Many teachers are impressed when the crowds are large, but not Christ. He knew the evil motives of the human heart. When the Lord used parables, He wanted to set forth, as with a test, the motive of the hearer. He was not trying to ascertain intelligence but the spiritual responsiveness of the listener. For those who had spiritual hunger, the meaning in one parable led to deeper understanding in the next….To see the spiritual truth (to hear) is the proof that we have received the illumination of that Holy Spirit who alone can open our spiritual eyes, blind by nature, to the truth of God.
—R. Alan Cole, The Gospel According to Mark: An Introduction and Commentary, p. 115
