Growing up in the church I always knew God as strength and power and someone who always saves the day–similar to how I view my own father. It wasn’t until a few years ago though, that I really started to contemplate God as playing the role of a Mother as well.
To set things straight, I do not actually mean that God is my biological mother or is in some way married to God the Father; I simply mean that ———- God is transcendent and unlimited–and ultimately He is everything. He can play the role and relate to us as an earthly mother would.
You may ask, well where is that in Scripture? Look at this beautiful verse in Isaiah 66 that says:
“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you” (Isaiah 66:13). God’s passionate desire is to love us as a mother loves and comforts her own child. We can fall into the arms of our God who desires to holds us as we cry and wipe away our tears. He tenderly and affectionately cares for us. Even more than that,
- He knows our full name
- He knows how many hairs are on our heads
- What makes us laugh
- What makes us cry, and
- What makes us afraid
He knows us intimately and He is waiting for us to let down our guard and allow Him to love us in such a profound and soul-healing way.
And here’s the best part: all we have to do is accept HIM!
